Message approval is a content-based approval feature designed to empower you to ensure that advocacy messages are on-message.
How message approval works
Messages are approved or rejected based on a combination of explicit approval or rejection, and on content matching against previous message review. Messages are sent at the time of their approval.
When an advocate submits a new message via the action center form, the default state of the message is "pending", and it passes through a workflow process.
If the message is an exact match for a prefilled message without any modification, it is automatically approved and sent
If the message is an exact match for a previously approved message, it is automatically approved and sent
If the message is an exact match for a previously rejected message, it is automatically rejected and NOT sent
If none of these criteria are met the message will be listed as pending in the action center dashboard
When you approve or reject a pending message in the dashboard, this status is automatically applied to any other messages that match the content. E.g. if an advocate wrote an identical message addressed to both of their US Senators, and you approve one, then the other will be also be approved.
All advocate messages pass through a profanity filter prior to this step or to sending (on non-message approval enabled action centers). These will be automatically marked as rejected in the above workflow.
Enabling message approval
Message approval is available with an account-based feature flag. To enable this, ask our customer support team via the chat widget in the app, and we'll enable it.
Turning message approval on
The "switch" for message approval will be available under your target messages in the action center wizard. This is off by default for new action centers.
It won't be available for petition or phone call-only action centers, as there are no sent messages to confirm.
Keeping up with new pending messages
Turning on message approval also turns on a daily email digest sent to the action center owner (creator).
This email will go out once per day, per action center, for which you have new pending messages. The email includes a count of new pending messages (previous day) and cumulative pending messages.
